Extending a partition is a tricky task and you need to have some technical knowledge in order to extend a partition. Mainly the need to extend a partition occurs when the partition gets filled and we need more space on the partition without removing any of the data.
Sometimes when we try to extend the partition then the Extend Volume button is greyed out and we cannot extend the partition. Here we will tell you how you can resolve the problem and then extend the partition.
Note: Partition cannot be extended if you are using a second disk and your primary disk is filled up. Space should be available on the partition that you want to extend.
What to do when you Can’t Extend Partition and Extend Volume is Greyed Out

Reason for Extend Volume button to greyed out
There are multiple reasons for the extend button to be greyed out. Disk management is a tool that will help you to manage partitions and perform different operations on them.

- Partition of FAT or other formats cannot be extended.
The partitions that can be extended are RAW or NTFS. This only works on Disk Management. If you have FAT or other formats then the partition cannot be extended on Windows PC.
- If the primary partition is extended and has unallocated space then it cannot be extended.

A partition can only be extended if there is free space on the drive. So first you have to free up space on the drive. To free up space on the drive you have to delete a partition or you can shrink a partition.
- Type “Disk Management” in the Window search bar and click on Create and format hard disk partitions.
- Now right-click on the empty partition or the partition not needed and then click on the “Delete Volume” button and then click on “OK”.
Note: For freeing up space you can also shrink the neighbor partition. To do so right-click on the partition and then click on the Shrink Volume button now specify the amount and then click on the “Shrink” and then click on “OK” to confirm.
